Start with a bang, we thought. So we booked this lot. Very highly recommended.

Monster Ceilidh Band are Amy Thatcher (Kathryn Tickell Band, The Shee), Carly Blain (Border Fiddles), Kieran Szifris and David de la Haye (Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies). They’ve taken their cross-genre ceilidh music all over the world, entertaining generations new and old whilst retaining the true spirit of ceilidh dancing – getting up and having a party! Here they are joined by DJ The Touch, but don’t be scared - it’s still folk!

Saturday afternoon

Display Ceilidh - The Aurora Ceilidh Band

The display ceilidh, animated by the Aurora Band, is where each university can showcase their society's dance team. There are a few dances followed by a gap to watch a pretty display and have a rest before the ceilidh dancing starts again.

There will be rehearsal slots in the venue we're using all morning. Please sign up for these, as well as slots in the Display Ceilidh itself, on a list at the Festival Office on the Friday evening.

Saturday evening

Saturday evening Ceilidh - Clachan Yell

Clachan Yell are our absolute favourite tame ceilidh band. Kirsten once walked 12 miles to dance in a barn just because they were playing. Another of their ceilidhs saw people pouring boiling water into the toilets to defrost them. We also recommend you take a close look at Alasdair’s sporran.

Anecdotes aside - you’re in for a treat.

Saturday evening Contra - Vertical Expression with Rhodri Davies

Contra is what the Americans were up to whilst we were perfecting the ceilidh. For more about it, the “What’s Contra?” section of their website will fill the gaps in your folk education. IVFDF just wouldn’t be IVFDF without Contra, and so we’ve booked the best.

Vertical Expression are possibly the UK's most high-energy contra band, this is what happens when you take two English ceilidh musicians on fiddle and melodeon and put them with a guitar and double bass rhythm section with a love of bluegrass and gypsy jazz. All of the band members have backgrounds in playing for various kinds of dancing, throw in some old time music and foot percussion, a bit of French-Canadian one-row box, a few Irish fiddle tunes, some Django Reinhardt-style guitar, a bit of creativity and a lot of energy and fun...

Rhodri Davies will put you through your paces, whether you’re a seasoned contra dancer or you’ve never heard of it before.

Saturday evening Scottish Country Dance - Frank Thompson's Scottish Dance Band

Scottish Country dancing is what we do up here, and we fully intend to show you just why we enjoy it so much. Frank is not only one of the best SCD musicians in Scotland, he's also lovely. All dances will be called. Frank Thompson Appreciation Society hoodies available on request.
