Blackbeard’s Tea Party

Type : Ceilidh | When : Friday Evening | Time : 7:30pm | Venue : Octagon

Funky folk tunes, saucy songs and an infectious stage energy. Blackbeard's Tea Party mix fiddles & squeezeboxes, guitar noise & synth bass, and a feast of international hand percussion to bring you an unforgettable folk-rock extravaganza. Grounded in English traditions - but never afraid to explore more exotic musical avenues - they create a sound that is equal parts tasty, dramatic and danceable.

Professor Elemental

Type : Concert | When : Friday Late Night Extra | Time : 11:30pm | Venue : Firth Court

Professor Elemental is a rather splendid steampunk chap-hop artist whose favourite subjects include tea, village fetes and fighting trousers. So why not make yourself a pot of Earl Grey, bring a slice of batternberg, while the Professor brews you a nice hip hop number, stirs in some comedy, then serves it with scones and a nice warm cuddle. Altogether now....when I say Assam, you say lovely!

A wall of brass, clarinets, drums, bass, strings and voices woven round tradi -tional Eastern European dance music.

Stick Shift

Type : Contra | When : Saturday Evening | Time : 8:00pm | Venue : Croft House

Stick Shift is an exciting dance band that, like all the best overnight sensations, has evolved over several years. Nigel and Robbie had played together for a long time in various dance bands and in many a tunes session. Holly's arrival on fiddle and piano turned out to be the catalyst that fused with Nigel and Robbie's pyrotechnical fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and bass playing of Scottish, Irish and American tunes to produce a driving, melodic sound underpinned by Holly's acclaimed, rock-solid piano.

The Albion Band

Type : Concert | When : Saturday Late Night Extra | Time : 00:30 | Venue : City Hall

The Albion Band are an English folk/rock band, originally conceived, brought together and led by musician Ashley Hutchings. Generally considered one of the most important groupings in the genre, it has contained or been associated with a large proportion of major English folk performers in its long and fluid history. In 2011 for the first time in the band’s history, Ashley stepped aside to let son, Blair Dunlop, lead a new generation of folk artists from a range of backgrounds in shaping a new Albion Band that went back to the band’s roots to make English rock music rooted in tradition.

Sciorr:Staged

Type : Concert | When : Saturday Afternoon | Time : 4:15pm | Venue : Library Theatre

An electrifying Irish dance show from Sheffield, combining traditional Irish dance and original music.
An original 15-piece Irish dance show unlike anything on the festival or theatre scene at present. Promoting original music and dance with top musicians from the festival folk circuit at the heart of the performance, you are promised an evening of sound and spectacle not to be missed.Whether dancing solo or as an ensemble, Sciorr’s relaxed, fluid interpretation of Irish dance never fails to ench
ant audiences, and their self-penned routines have a reputation for style and intensity. Newly-written musical arrangements are tailored to provide an intricately linked show where music and dance are celebrated equally. The musicians are an integral part of the performance and present their skills alongside the dancers, interacting throughout each set and step to create a completely original show. The chemistry is well established between the 6 dancers, who have been together in various forms since the early 90s. Connected via the Scoil Rince Nua dance school and sharing family backgrounds in Sheffield City Morris, these talented ladies began to perform together on overseas excursions to Ecuador (1993), Hungary (1998) and Poland (2002); before folk festival organisers spotted them stealing the show from the Morris team and booked them in their own right. Since officially becoming a dance group in 2003, Sciorr have continued to develop and perform their own distinctive style of Irish dance at numerous festivals around the UK. Moving from street performances and festival dance spots to a stage show is a natural progression for this exciting group, showcasing their skills to better effect – and hopefully preserving each set of dancing shoes for longer (tarmac and flagstones are not kind to the leather!).
