Cornish Dance Workshop, InterVarsity Folk Dance Festival, Cambridge, 2001 Notes prepared by Peter Lane (lane@which.net) based on 'Troyl' and 'Troyl II' (1981) by Gans Merv & Alison Davey amended for performance by the 'English Miscellany' Folk Dance Group. 1. SIX-HAND REEL Collected in the Wadebridge area Three couples in single line (facing 90 degrees to line). Polka step, lifting feet up at each step, start right foot; keep stepping throughout, even when stationary. A1 1-4 All step forwards. 5-8 All step right and left, drop hands and turn around. A2 1-8 Repeat to place, finishing in line facing partner. B1 1-8} Reel of six, starting by passing partner by the right, finishing B2 1-8} by men turning partner under their arm to form a longways set. A3 1-8 Right-hand turn with partner; left-hand turn with partner. A4 1-8 Back-to-back with partner; two-hand turn partner. B3 1-8 Head couple gallop down the centre and back. B4 1-8 Heads cast to bottom, all follow; heads arch, all dance through. Repeat (for example, twice more). 2. FER LYSKERYS (fehrliske'ris) (Liskeard Fair) Reconstructed Four couples, square set. Polka step as above; identify first couple and hence heads and sides. A1 1-4 Each head couple dances across to face side couple on left, then dances backwards into opposite position. Side couples the same. A2 1-4 Couples dance forward, and slightly diagonally right, to form an anticlockwise wheel with men in the centre, still holding partner's hand and putting left hand on shoulder of man in front; dance once around, and back into place during last bar. B1 1-8 Repeat 1-8, but remain in wheel formation at the end. A3 1-4 Head men join hands across middle and head couples step to first couple's right then left (1st couple step: right, left behind, right, hop, left, right behind, left, hop; 3rd couple step: right behind, left, right behind, hop, left behind, right, left behind, hop), while each side couple steps individually out to right and back; then each turns, man backing, once around, ending back in wheel formation. A4 1-4 Side couples the same, taking direction to start from couple that were in front in the wheel (that is, to 4th couple's right), while head couples step out to right and back; then all turn back to place. B2 1-8 Grand ladies chain, with men dancing out and right as women make first star. A5 - B4 Repeat whole dance. 3. TREMADHEVES (trema'theves) (Gathering the sheep) partly reconstructed Four couples in square set. Polka step as above; identify first couple. A1 1-8 All couples dance anticlockwise round circle, holding inside hands; take coach-and-horses hold at end of last bar. B1 1-8 Each couple dance one step towards centre, then turn away from each other to reverse the hold for one step, then dance out, then turn; then repeat, ending with turn to face partner. C1 1-8 All dance individually round the circle, weaving and clapping closest hand with each person who passes, starting with men passing outside women so that partners clap left hands; one bar to pass each person; clap on first beat of each bar, alternately on apex of square or of diamond formation. A2 1-8 After 8th clap, women dance out behind partners and into centre (2 bars) while men continue dancing steadily round circle. Women rest arms on each other's shoulders in centre and dance 4 fishwives steps (as danced by 2nd couple in head's line in Fer Lyskerys); then cast out to right and back to place (2 bars) to meet partners finishing circle. B2 1-8 Weave as in B1. C2 1-8 Men dance behind partners into centre to form anticlockwise wheel (2 bars) while women continue dancing steadily round circle. Men wheel twice round, then dance out in front of partner to places. A3 1-8 Weave as in B1. B3 1-8 Partners meet, give right hands and woman dances out behind partner under raised arms, swapping hands to make improper circle (2 bars); then all dance left holding hands in circle. C3 1-8 First couple break, and first man leads dancers into tight spiral with first woman at the other end. In final bar, all raise arms on last beat and shout. 4. TURKEY RHUBARB (Final part of the Madron Guise Dancing) Individual couples in a circle. Ballroom hold; start outside foot; waltz time. A1 1-4 All step forward, close, and hop while making small kick; repeat twice more; step forward, turn, and point new outside foot. 5-8 Repeat in opposite direction. A2 1-8 Repeat all. B1 1-8} Couples dance round circle, turning, with the following step: B2 1-8} starting with outside foot, take three steps, then point free foot; continue, starting with pointed foot. Repeat ad. lib.
