Pubs and Beer

One of the most important pages in this web site ...........

On Campus

There are three bars in Devonshire House that will be open over the weekend. The first is the Ram, the main student bar. Cheap beer, wonderful staff, hot food served by the equally lovely Anton but it does get busy and drinks cannot be taken out of the bar.

The Balcony Bar is one of the main bars for the festival. Located above the refectory it will run a full bar but does not have real ale on tap (boo hiss). The Gallery Restaurant is the other main festival bar, located next to the Balcony bar it will provide a full bar INCLUDING real ale.

Off Campus

Off campus the selection of pubs is fairly adequate. :-). The biggest pub in the area is the Imperial. Turn right at the bottom of the entrance by the Washington Singer Labs. Follow the road to the end, turn left. About 100 meters on the other side of the road is the Imperial. You can't miss it. This is a Weatherspoon pub so the beer's cheap. You can also get food here, typically around £5-£6, though there can be a wait at times due to demand. Very popular both with the students and the locals.

Going down the hill from the Imperial towards the Station you will come across the Jolly Porter. A good selection of beers and they're have even been known to entertain a certain University Folk Dance Society Stag Party.( If you don't ask we won't be forced to lie.)

Walking towards town from the Imperial you'll come across Fermat's Number. After that you're heading in towards the city centre and you're on your own.

The Victoria pub can be found by turning left out of the main entrance to the university and walking up the hill to the traffic lights that intersect Prince of Wales Road, Union Road and Pennsylvania Road. If you carry straight on over the traffic lights you'll soon come to the Vic which is one of the student pubs in the area.

If you turn right at the traffic lights and head down Pennsylvania Road you eventually come back towards the city centre and will no doubt encounter The Black Horse, one of the other main student pubs.

Of course there are plenty of other pubs in town but these are the ones that are within 20 mins walking distance of the university. The only thing that is best worth remembering is that the walk back is going to be uphill. Still, a few beers later- who's worried?
